Baby Steps to Eating Healthy

Hey Guys,

This is a post is a throw back from a couple years ago. I have re-shared this before but reading it just inspires me to always keep working hard at making long lasting changes.

Molly is a RKC instructor, AMAZING Yoga instructor, Corrective Exercise Specialist and a Rock Star Mommy. She helped me from Day 1 figure out how to make the first steps to becoming a healthier, more natural eater. She shares with us her story and her baby steps to regaining control, rewiring our brains, and baby stepping towards healthy choices.

Enjoy!

Baby Steps to Eating Healthy

By Molly Bird, CES, RKC II, Yoga Instructor

Tonight I am making a delicious crock-pot meal.  I've chopped my veggies, loaded the pot, and set it on low.  It's 7:15pm and this will cook over night then be eaten for lunch and/or dinner tomorrow.  As I was making it, I was thinking back on my stages of improvement with nutrition.  It might go something like this (over the course of a few years, and with lots of influence from others and self research):

Start eating fruit and veggies every day.
Start cooking my own meals every night (or as close as possible).
Eat more veggies than fruit every day.
Reduce dairy (and no low fat crap).  Reduce processed foods.
Start buying all fresh fruits and veggies over frozen or canned.
Eliminate gluten and high fructose corn syrup.
Seriously reduce all sugar (I can't lie and say eliminate).
Start buying organic and reduce processed meats.
Go to farmers market and buy local, fresh foods.
Buy farm fresh eggs, locally raised, free range beef, antibiotic free chicken, and wild-caught fish.
Plant my own garden and eat fruits & veggies according to what is in season.
Start juicing and drink only fresh coconut water straight from the coconut.
Give up coffee.  Drink only water, tea, or fresh coconut water (and let's be honest, the occasional alcoholic beverage).

Like I said, these changes happened slowly over the course of a few years.  There were many little stepping-stone changes that I probably can't even remember, but those are some big ones.  The latest one was coffee and this happened a few weeks ago, although I have done it before.  It's not that I think the coffee is necessarily bad, but the urge to use creamer in my coffee is.  I've tried coconut milk and a whole list of other things like honey and cinnamon, but it doesn't work for me.  So now I drink green tea in the morning, which I love.  I happen to like the “Yogi” brand of tea.  It tastes great, but it also has these great sayings on the tab that hangs over your cup and I actually look forward to reading a new one each morning.  Today it said, “Goodness should become human nature, because it is real in nature.”  I've had better, but that's a pretty good one.

So back to my meal tonight, I am starting to smell it now as it cooks.  Here it is in all of its crock-pot glory. Look at all the beautiful colors.  Honestly, isn't it pretty?  Different colors in vegetables mean different nutrients and benefits for the body.  One way of keeping a balanced diet is to keep your meals colorful.  Here is the ingredient list:

3 celery stalks, 2 yellow eggplant, 1 red pepper, 2 jalapenos, 1 turnip, 1 yellow onion, 1 red onion, ½ butternut squash, 3 garlic cloves, a handful of cilantro, and an antelope back strap on the bottom, covered by the heaping pile of veggies.  I might add some unsalted butter.

*A round steak, roast, venison, or chicken could be substituted in place of antelope.

Now let's talk cost.  I hear it all the time, “It's so expensive to eat healthy!”  Try going to the store and only staying on the outside perimeter.  You'll visit the produce section and the meat department, maybe the organic isle every once in a while for almond flour or coconut oil, etc.  When you aren't buying all of the crap in the isles, you have a lot more money to spend on GOOD food.  Skip the cereal, pasta, cookies, fruit snacks, and frozen meals.  Maybe you don't save money, maybe you stay about the same, but you are eating healthy.  You are fighting off illness, cancer, and type-2 diabetes.  In the long run you will spend less on medical bills.  So what is the cost of my meal tonight?

Celery, .99 cents for a bunch, I used 3 stalks, so let's say .50 cents. 2 eggplants, these were free from a friend with a garden that had more than they could use, but let's say $1, you can usually get 2 for a dollar at the farmer's market.  A red pepper, this came from the store, $1.49.  Also, two jalapenos from my garden now frozen in bags, free.  Cilantro, also from my garden, free.  One turnip, .50 cents, at the farmer's market. Two onions, 3 for a dollar at the farmer's market, so let's say .75 cents.  Half of a butternut squash, 1.50 farmer's market, so .75 cents.  Three garlic cloves, .89 cents for a whole head of garlic, so maybe .20 cents.  Antelope roast, free, came from a friend who goes on hunting trips and comes back with more than they can use.  (Are you seeing a trend here. . . when you eat healthy and make friends who are healthy, you get free healthy food!)  If you purchased it in a store it might cost $15 or so on the high end.  So what is my total? The final cost is $21.69 for a huge meal that will probably last us for 3 nights and is amazingly fresh and healthy.  And in all reality it cost me only about $5 because of my nice, healthy friends.

Bottom line is, you need to eat healthy to be healthy.  Exercise is great, but you can't out train a poor diet.  Progress may happen slowly, but be proud of the changes you make.  Keep striving to be better, while at the same time being grateful for your motivation to change at all.  You may have setbacks and “bad” days, get right back on.  Don't use the cost excuse, but if you really can't be persuaded that it isn't more expensive, then just consider it an investment in your health and quality of life.

If you like what you've read here and want more healthy recipes and ideas, visit me on Facebook at my page, Simply Strong.  I like to keep things simple, which is why the “primal” or “paleo” diet works for me, but I also recognize that different things work for different bodies and there is more than one way to be healthy.

Thanks for reading, Namaste :)

Weighing in on Weight Loss

When did we become so obsessed with losing weight that we lost track of whats really important?

When are we going to realize what the scale says has nothing to do with our state of "health"?

It's ok to have certain goals as weight loss, and body fat loss, but is your base of strength there?

Before that...

Are you moving correctly?

or...

Are you fighting through pain?

I mean, let's be honest.

Weight loss... or fat loss for that matter...

Has more to do with input rather than output...

Meaning what you eat is more important that the energy you exert. Is it quality? Does it have nutritive value? Do you feel better after you eat it?

Can you change your thinking enough to stop worrying about weight loss?

Imagine...

You shifted your focus of your own weight loss and lifestyle change and instead help another positively change their lives?

Do you think, through service for another, you could achieve your life long physical goals?

Is it really all about our weight?

Grab a pen and pad of paper. Write down three things you want to do while you are alive.

1.
2.
3.

Next, write down three things you love about yourself. Look in the mirror, smile, and write them down.

1.
2.
3.

Then, write down three things you respect about yourself. Honest? Loyal? How do you respect those you love?

1.
2.
3.

Finally, write down three ways you can apply all of those positives about you to help service someone who may struggle to fill this out?

1.
2.
3.

Are you struggling to answer these questions? Grab a loved one. Someone close you. They are now your
accountability partner. Open up with love and respect for them, and allow them to help you answer these. But, then go forward eager to help another.

That is how we will change the industry, the culture, and the world.

Live, Love, Respect, and Serve.

Kris

Let's Simplify Your Nutrition

Hey Guys,

Let's get right into today with this post. Nutrition is never an easy thing... For ANYONE. Trust me. If it were easy, then we wouldn't have an industry built upon your inability to put the chocolate cake down. Okay okay, joking aside. Who doesn't love chocolate cake? We all have indulgences, but some of us can overcome, distract, and avoid temptation easier than others.

So I ask, are you struggling with nutrition? No worries. It's common. Some  folks lack ideas, some can't handle the log, and some folks are just completely lost.

Let's make it easy.

1. Protein. It builds and recovers muscle. Eat two fist size servings per day.

2. Fat. It's our primary and most efficient fuel source. Eat it daily and before bed to help avoid starving your metabolism.

3. Starchy-carbs. Potatoes, bread, pasta, etc. The "evil" ones? No. Acceptable at the right times. Are you going to workout or did you just workout? If yes, enjoy small portion. If no, then avoid.

4. Fibrous-carbs. Broccoli, leafy greens, asparagus, bell peppers, list goes on and on.... EAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! Buffet style :) Packed full of nutrients and much needed fiber. Enjoy them raw, steamed, sautéed, baked, whatever. Enjoy.

5. What to avoid: processed food and sugars. They spike insulin and promote fat storage. Dairy. Full of sugar, causes gut inflammation, and is a weak source of vitamins, protein, and fat (exclusion is farm fresh milk from grassfed cows)

Think simple about your plate. Eat for your activity that day.

Remember...

Fast food is ONLY convenient and "fast" to the unprepared individual.

Think ahead, plan your day, eat to live.

EAT and LIVE!

Kris

How to Succeed in the Fitness Industry... I Guess?

It would appear you just have to... Get Naked?

Okay, this may or may not be a misleading title. This is more of a rant or wake up call for some of you. Have you ever noticed how the health and wellness or fitness industry seems to be based around one thing? What is it you ask? Well, it isn't service. It's sex appeal, and of course, money. There are many services you can purchase, tons of programs, supplements, and people to "hire" to help you on your path. Yes, I understand business 101. Nothing is free, and fees are rendered for services. That's all fine and well. You should be paid for your time and for your worth. I would not come to your restaurant and expect to eat for free.

Where I am going with this is the part above where I mention "hiring" a qualified professional. See what I did there? I fancied that word up for you. Makes me sound "smarter", and allows me to charge more. Now a days, everyone, and I mean everyone, is a "coach" or "qualified". You login to Instagram and see a flood of great coaches, trainers, and nutrition experts. You login to Facebook and sure enough you see similar pictures that claim "I can help you reach your goals, TODAY". Personally, I love an experienced professional who has poured their lives, time, money, and education into what they do. There are many of them out there. They typically have a lot of unrecognizable letters after their name on a signed letter. But they are not typically the ones with Instagram accounts like you see to the right.

So here is where I get what you might call, fired up. Where is our industry going? What is happening. What are we trying to achieve? It would appear the more pictures you post of yourself in front of a mirror, half naked, laying around with your supplements, promoting competitions, focusing purely on physique, the more you will "succeed". It's not just one gender either. But if I could give advice to a young trainer fresh in their steps towards making a career out of this, it would be to stop with the selfies and flex shots. Maybe they look good, but what will make you more of a professional? Bikini pictures from your vacation? Or, packing your website, youtube, Instagram, and Facebook with USABLE content that will actually help someone get control.

If I could sum this up, I would say:

Motivation is OVERRATED.

Instead, inspire with knowledge, change your business from bikinis and abs to education and service. Become modest and worry more about the world around you than the way you look for you morning ab photo. If we don't start now, what will come next makes this an unsavory industry.

Is your photo:  Fitness or Soft Core Porn?

Now lets class this industry up, become professionals, and really create change.

Stay Strong,
Kris

Destined to Fail

Getting stronger, faster, or leaner is not always the easiest task. It can be frustrating, it can upset us, it can make you want quit at it all together. You have to remember you're in this position for a reason. Maybe you just had a baby, or you are in an area of fitness and strength that is new to you, maybe you have set a high goal for yourself that will take time.

There are so many contributing factors that lead to your gains and results. Don't let the hard days get you down and don't allow a difficult task to be the end of you.

The secret and what you need to understand is, failure is going to happen. The worlds strongest, fastest, most successful people are also those who have failed more than any other person. It is in these moments, the choices, and actions that fail, that we really learn who we are, what we want, and how we are going to do it.

DESTINED TO FAIL VS BEING A FAILURE

It is not a matter of success vs failure... If you want to succeed, and if you want to continually become better, then you are destined to experience failure. You are destined to become a failure. Do not confuse that as you yourself are a failure. You are nothing but a gleaming ray of potential. But you cannot find success without first learning along the way.

Today...

Remember that you are a strong person. You have lived a life that compares to no one else around you. You have seen things, felt pain, and overcome serious obstacles. It's in those experiences that you grew. Allow yourself the opportunity to continue to grow. Don't allow fear to anchor you. Instead allow that fear to drive, motivate, and push you to your new heights.

Today...

Embrace the challenges. Become the success you KNOW you are.

Kris
