Weighing in on Weight Loss

When did we become so obsessed with losing weight that we lost track of whats really important?

When are we going to realize what the scale says has nothing to do with our state of "health"?

It's ok to have certain goals as weight loss, and body fat loss, but is your base of strength there?

Before that...

Are you moving correctly?

or...

Are you fighting through pain?

I mean, let's be honest.

Weight loss... or fat loss for that matter...

Has more to do with input rather than output...

Meaning what you eat is more important that the energy you exert. Is it quality? Does it have nutritive value? Do you feel better after you eat it?

Can you change your thinking enough to stop worrying about weight loss?

Imagine...

You shifted your focus of your own weight loss and lifestyle change and instead help another positively change their lives?

Do you think, through service for another, you could achieve your life long physical goals?

Is it really all about our weight?

Grab a pen and pad of paper. Write down three things you want to do while you are alive.

1.
2.
3.

Next, write down three things you love about yourself. Look in the mirror, smile, and write them down.

1.
2.
3.

Then, write down three things you respect about yourself. Honest? Loyal? How do you respect those you love?

1.
2.
3.

Finally, write down three ways you can apply all of those positives about you to help service someone who may struggle to fill this out?

1.
2.
3.

Are you struggling to answer these questions? Grab a loved one. Someone close you. They are now your
accountability partner. Open up with love and respect for them, and allow them to help you answer these. But, then go forward eager to help another.

That is how we will change the industry, the culture, and the world.

Live, Love, Respect, and Serve.

Stay Strong,
Kris

Let's Simplify Your Nutrition

Hey Guys,

Let's get right into today with this post. Nutrition is never an easy thing... For ANYONE. Trust me. If it were easy, then we wouldn't have an industry built upon your inability to put the chocolate cake down. Okay okay, joking aside. Who doesn't love chocolate cake? We all have indulgences, but some of us can overcome, distract, and avoid temptation easier than others.

So I ask, are you struggling with nutrition? No worries. It's common. Some  folks lack ideas, some can't handle the log, and some folks are just completely lost.

Let's make it easy.

1. Protein. It builds and recovers muscle. Eat two fist size servings per day.

2. Fat. It's our primary and most efficient fuel source. Eat it daily and before bed to help avoid starving your metabolism.

3. Starchy-carbs. Potatoes, bread, pasta, etc. The "evil" ones? No. Acceptable at the right times. Are you going to workout or did you just workout? If yes, enjoy small portion. If no, then avoid.

4. Fibrous-carbs. Broccoli, leafy greens, asparagus, bell peppers, list goes on and on.... EAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! Buffet style :) Packed full of nutrients and much needed fiber. Enjoy them raw, steamed, sautéed, baked, whatever. Enjoy.

5. What to avoid: processed food and sugars. They spike insulin and promote fat storage. Dairy. Full of sugar, causes gut inflammation, and is a weak source of vitamins, protein, and fat (exclusion is farm fresh milk from grassfed cows)

Think simple about your plate. Eat for your activity that day.

Remember...

Fast food is ONLY convenient and "fast" to the unprepared individual.

Think ahead, plan your day, eat to live.

EAT and LIVE!

Stay Strong,
Kris

How to Succeed in the Fitness Industry... I Guess?

It would appear you just have to... Get Naked?

Okay, this may or may not be a misleading title. This is more of a rant or wake up call for some of you. Have you ever noticed how the health and wellness or fitness industry seems to be based around one thing? What is it you ask? Well, it isn't service. It's sex appeal, and of course, money. There are many services you can purchase, tons of programs, supplements, and people to "hire" to help you on your path. Yes, I understand business 101. Nothing is free, and fees are rendered for services. That's all fine and well. You should be paid for your time and for your worth. I would not come to your restaurant and expect to eat for free.

Where I am going with this is the part above where I mention "hiring" a qualified professional. See what I did there? I fancied that word up for you. Makes me sound "smarter", and allows me to charge more. Now a days, everyone, and I mean everyone, is a "coach" or "qualified". You login to Instagram and see a flood of great coaches, trainers, and nutrition experts. You login to Facebook and sure enough you see similar pictures that claim "I can help you reach your goals, TODAY". Personally, I love an experienced professional who has poured their lives, time, money, and education into what they do. There are many of them out there. They typically have a lot of unrecognizable letters after their name on a signed letter. But they are not typically the ones with Instagram accounts like you see to the right.

So here is where I get what you might call, fired up. Where is our industry going? What is happening. What are we trying to achieve? It would appear the more pictures you post of yourself in front of a mirror, half naked, laying around with your supplements, promoting competitions, focusing purely on physique, the more you will "succeed". It's not just one gender either. But if I could give advice to a young trainer fresh in their steps towards making a career out of this, it would be to stop with the selfies and flex shots. Maybe they look good, but what will make you more of a professional? Bikini pictures from your vacation? Or, packing your website, youtube, Instagram, and Facebook with USABLE content that will actually help someone get control.

If I could sum this up, I would say:

Motivation is OVERRATED.

Instead, inspire with knowledge, change your business from bikinis and abs to education and service. Become modest and worry more about the world around you than the way you look for you morning ab photo. If we don't start now, what will come next makes this an unsavory industry.

Is your photo:  Fitness or Soft Core Porn?

Now lets class this industry up, become professionals, and really create change.

Stay Strong,
Kris

Destined to Fail

Getting stronger, faster, or leaner is not always the easiest task. It can be frustrating, it can upset us, it can make you want quit at it all together. You have to remember you're in this position for a reason. Maybe you just had a baby, or you are in an area of fitness and strength that is new to you, maybe you have set a high goal for yourself that will take time.

There are so many contributing factors that lead to your gains and results. Don't let the hard days get you down and don't allow a difficult task to be the end of you.

The secret and what you need to understand is, failure is going to happen. The worlds strongest, fastest, most successful people are also those who have failed more than any other person. It is in these moments, the choices, and actions that fail, that we really learn who we are, what we want, and how we are going to do it.

DESTINED TO FAIL VS BEING A FAILURE

It is not a matter of success vs failure... If you want to succeed, and if you want to continually become better, then you are destined to experience failure. You are destined to become a failure. Do not confuse that as you yourself are a failure. You are nothing but a gleaming ray of potential. But you cannot find success without first learning along the way.

Today...

Remember that you are a strong person. You have lived a life that compares to no one else around you. You have seen things, felt pain, and overcome serious obstacles. It's in those experiences that you grew. Allow yourself the opportunity to continue to grow. Don't allow fear to anchor you. Instead allow that fear to drive, motivate, and push you to your new heights.

Today...

Embrace the challenges. Become the success you KNOW you are.

Stay Strong,
Kris

WANTED: Industry Paradigm Shift.. PLEASE

Are you wasting time measuring your health in terms of pounds and inches? Have you always done this only to be left in the same spot or worse than when you started?

Does your nutrition plan leave you starving and lacking quality foods? Does it leave you hungry at night, awaiting breakfast. Does it make you want to secretly BINGE EAT?

Don't waste time ----CLICK HERE----> The 30-Day FORGE Challenge

Life is not and never was intended to be limited, restricted, and guilt ridden. Don't allow food, movement, and numbers get a hold of you. Guess what... YOU ARE IN CONTROL. You always have been, and always will be.

It's the fact that you stopped realizing that, that no one has been at the wheel. Now if you were driving down the road and closed your eyes, let go of the wheel and only restricted your gas tank, over accelerated, and didnt wear a seat belt, would you be in very good shape?

Would you be closer to a healthier you? Or would you be surprised you are alive still? :D

It is time we change this freaking industry and it is time that step up and make a BIG change that puts all of the money hungry supplement, gimmick, junk reps out of business and puts us into the drivers seat.

Im not telling you to lose weight. Im not telling you to get strong. Im not even telling you to start eating healthy.

I am telling you to just take control.

Just take control.

Yours in Strength,
Moulton Kettlebell

Mungo Jerry, Eggs, and Getting Toasted

Thank You Mungo Jerry

For your listening pleasure:

Well, it is officially SUMMER! Just coming in from a workout with a couple of my favorite students, and it was a hot one! There is something about this time of year that brings us out of hiding and into the sunshine. Well, it only took a few minutes into the recent QUADZILLA workout for them to feel the true burn of summer :)

To see it CLICK HERE ----> http://bit.ly/1lbTwJr

I'm Not Yolking Around

In other news, a common topic I feel I keep having to explain to people is the fact that the egg is useless without the yolk. This drives me absolutely insane, as the yolk is not only the best tasting part of the egg, but it is also the most nutritious part.

So let's take a look at the gloriousness that is the egg:

  • The yolk is mostly fat. Yes, fat. Fat that is great for your brain, nervous system, and metabolism. Remember, FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT. This is also why it is ok to eat bacon. But it needs to be quality bacon. Not the slimy thin nitrate pumped pieces of "bacon" you find in your local WalFart.
  • The yolk is packed full of nutrition, including vitamins B2, B12, D and iron!
  • The yolk needs the white and the whites need the yolk! The yolks help to balance the amino acids of the whites, making the protein in the egg whites more easily absorbed by our bodies.
  • A large egg yolk contains about 210 milligrams of cholesterol and 5 grams of fat. However, studies (found abundantly on any study search) shown that eating one egg everyday does not heighten your potential for high blood pressure and heart diseases.

Eating only the egg white is like doing half squats... they don't count.

All this talk about eggs has made me hungry. What better around breakfast time than a few slices of good ol French Toast. French toast is a classic. It is simple. It is hard to screw up. It hits the spot and leaves you very satisfied. So here is a little sweet, simple, hard to screw up yet effective workout: TOASTED

Welcome to TOASTED

Bell Size: Men will use a 24kg bell, and women a 16kg bell (or heavier if appropriate)

This is a simple but effective Swing/Goblet Squat ladder to be done with minimal to no rest, but QUALITY REPS is a must. Be smart, be safe.

10 Swings / 10 Goblet Squats
9 Swings / 9 Goblet Squats
8 Swings / 8 Goblet Squats
7 Swings / 7 Goblet Squats
6 Swings / 6 Goblet Squats
5 Swings / 5 Goblet Squats
4 Swings / 4 Goblet Squats
3 Swings / 3 Goblet Squats
2 Swings / 2 Goblet Squats
1 Swings / 1 Goblet Squats

Now... here is where you get TOASTED... Make your way back up to 10/10!

1 Swings / 1 Goblet Squats
2 Swings / 2 Goblet Squats
3 Swings / 3 Goblet Squats
4 Swings / 4 Goblet Squats
5 Swings / 5 Goblet Squats
6 Swings / 6 Goblet Squats
7 Swings / 7 Goblet Squats
8 Swings / 8 Goblet Squats
9 Swings / 9 Goblet Squats
10 Swings / 10 Goblet Squats

Remember QUALITY is key. If you start to lose your form, set the bell down, take a couple of breaths, and then get right back into it.

Enjoy :)

Stay Strong,
Kris

The Art of Strength and the Key to its Success

There is not a person in the room that does not desire the ability to be strong. When we talk about strength at Moulton Kettlebell, we make it the center of everything. We should understand the role strength plays in our lives and how vital it is to our existence. It should not be taken lightly and should be respected.

We I speak of strength, I typically am not talking about our physical state. Although that is trainable, and we can measure changes and gains. What I want people to understand is that strength is diverse, and powerful in your lives. When you make a commitment, you follow through. That is strength. When you see a friend in need, and you arrive with a helping hand. That is strength. When your body is shaking, weak, and wanting to quit, but your mind pushes you to go further. That is strength.

You see, none of those had to do with weight, a number on a kettlebell, or how many reps you could do.

THE KEY TO STRENGTH is to understand how fragile it can be, and how hard you have to work to earn its respect. If you honor, respect, and progress your strength, it will return the favor and make itself noticeable in all areas of your life.

Any of you reading this, who want to focus more on your strength, use the tips on introspection and see what you come up with:

1. Start Journaling. Yes, like Doug Funnie, pull out your journal get the day out on paper. The mind is intended for creativity and creation, not storage. Unload the mind, and allow it to do its job. The same goes for your programs. No longer just walk into the gym and wonder what to do. Get your program on paper, and journal every workout. The best of the best do this. Why not do what they do.

2. Start Writing. This may sound redundant, but what I want you to focus on here is a single topic, thought, or event and write. This doesn't have to be read by anyone. But it will allow your mind to expand and develop in a way that it was not trainer before. Our brain and our subconscious crave knowledge, education, and language. Feed your mind, and train it to make gains. You first topic (one all of my students get): Fear.

3. Start Walking. You may think, "I run X miles per week. I workout X days per week. I am fit, and weigh X amount. So what is walking going to do?" Walking, OUTSIDE, is going to do more than just get your legs moving and act as steady state, low heart rate cardio activity. When you get outside, in the elements, in nature, your brain is like a border collie that was let off the leash. You look around, your thoughts and brain activity eliminate the stress and cortisol levels. Your free to take a breath, relax your shoulders, relax your neck, to stop crushing your brain stem. Your blood flow increases, allowing all the tense areas in your body to calm down and relax... making you MORE MOBILE AND FLEXIBLE! (and I didn't even have to tie a band around your or tie you in a pretzel!)  You mind begins to raise its levels of a very amazing hormone called Oxytocin.

Many pregnant women and Mamas are familiar with this chemical release but we all use it, and need it regularly. Oxytocin, when released makes us feel calm, relaxed, and surpresses our fight or flight responses. It is the same chemical released by human touch and why hugging feels good! After a mother deliveres her child she has a rush of this, and they immediately go skin to skin. This is where their deep connection lies. This is why the best of the best in the sales, motivation, leadership, etc world shake hands and make eye contact. That connection allows our body to release oxytocin and makes us feel good, but most of all makes us feel safe. Oxytocin immediately inhibits our cortisol levels, which have their purpose, but in our society we have a constant drip of it. When our cortisol levels raise, immune functions drop, growth stops (hair, finger nails, skin, etc). We wonder why we are so sick, balding, and fat. So... Make oxytocin important in your life.

Try these few things, don't overwhelm yourself with them, but give them a try and see what life brings you.

Stay Strong,
Kris

Check Out This Simple Easy Oats Breakfast

Hey Guys!

I came across this recipe while browsing around online looking for some inspiring foods. I know that this type of dish is not a new concoction by any means, but its resurgence is well taken. This trend of uncooked oatmeal will make your mornings easier, less stressed, and very delicious. The possibilities for this recipe are endless. Below you will find a very simple mix of blueberries and natural sweeteners, but you can virtually add whatever your taste buds will go crazy for!

The key in this recipe is in its ingredients. The composition is great for all of your macro nutrients. Carbs, fats, and protein are present. This will start your day off with a jump-start and make sure you get to your snack/lunch without any hunger pangs.

Dig into this delicious meal with the confidence and guilt free pleasure you deserve. It packs vital nutrients that will surely build a better you!

Blueberry Honey Oatmeal

Ingredients:

1/4 cup uncooked oats
1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/4 cup of sugar free greek yogurt
1-1/2 tsp dried chia seeds (found in any grocery store now)
1 tsp milled flax seed
2 tsp local raw organic honey (also easily found in any store)
1/4 cup blueberries
Cinnamon to taste (optional)

Directions:

In a half pint jar (1 cup), or tupperware storage bowl (needs tight lid), add your oats, almond milk, chia seeds, honey, and cinnamon. Stir or shake well until combined. Remove the lid and add your blueberries or any other low glycemic fruit and stir until mixed in. Return the lid and store in the fridge over night or up to 2 days. This is deliciously served chilled.

Take this recipe and jazz it up with your own personal favorite flavors and flare! Adding a variety of spices, fruits, and nuts you can change the way you look at breakfast!

If you are like me and enjoy a seasonal favorite, try this little piece of heaven:

Pumpkin Pie Easy Oats

Ingredients:

1/4 cup uncooked oats
1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/4 cup of sugar free greek yogurt
1-1/2 tsp dried chia seeds (found in any grocery store now)
1 tsp milled flax seed

2 tsp local raw organic honey (also easily found in any store)
1/4 cup raw organic pumpkin puree
Pumpkin pie spice to taste (I use about 1 tsp)
1/2 medium apple diced (optional)
10 pecan pieces (optional, roughly a small handful)

Directions:

In a half pint jar (1 cup), or tupperware storage bowl (needs tight lid), add your oats, almond milk, chia seeds, honey, and pumpkin pie spice. Stir or shake well until combined. Remove the lid and add your pumpkin puree and stir until mixed in. Return the lid and store in the fridge over night or up to 2 days. When you eat the following morning add in your apple and pecan pieces to boost this fall flavor even more. You can add these the night before but I like the crunch of the apple and texture of the pecans. Caution: Wildly Addictive.

The World's Greatest Fat Loss Secret

Today kicks off our May, 30-Day FORGE Challenge! If you missed out this time around, its ok, just keep in touch with our pages to find out when the next one will begin.

Click Here! for more information about The FORGE

It is going to be a really really fun month that is purposely shifting our focus to aesthetics and fat loss. We are not going to play nice, we are going fuel a fire that will burn baby burn!

So, how do you create a program that in only 30 days will help a group of people melt their fat away? It's simple. If you know the secrets of the inner circle of course. And since you are reading this, you are officially in! Good news for you, huh?

There are tons of ways to really get one to lose pounds on the scale, but what we want is FAT LOSS. So here is the secret:

Hard Work.

Ah man, what a let down. He reeled me in and didn't give me a magic pill or miraculous equation that will cure my overweight flappy love handles. The truth is, it comes down to your increased energy expenditure, aka you workouts. Which for us are built around 2-days of strength training and 2-days of conditioning, and 1-day per week of mobility/flexibility training. It also comes down to, largely, and most importantly, your nutrition. In our Forge Challenge we require everyone to journal what they are eating and drinking. Each week we evaluate food logs and give feed back. You see, hard work is not only important in the physical battle of The Forge. It plays a large part in the mental side.

You are going to have cravings. You are going to think you feel hungry. You are going to want to give up and say oh well. But those are the very habits that got you to where you are today. We need to overcome those habits and fight back to gain control. It's not only you in the forge, sweating, feeling the heat. It is also your cravings, behaviors, and decisions that want to sabotage. We will fight as a team to break through and defeat these things.

I often will hear from students, "I use to drink this many sodas a day, BLAH", or "I use to hide the fact that I ate drive thru food from my family", and even "I used to be so depressed that I didn't even want to look in the mirror anymore."

Do you know why they dread the mirror and the scale? It has nothing to do with what society is doing or what our parents did to us. It comes down to our own habits and behaviors that we have created. In our upcoming book, REWIRED, we take the standard nutritional coaching model and crack it open. It is time for some introspection into our lives. It's time to dig deeper into our choices and decisions to see what makes us think. Then, we can rewire the way we think with education and motivation, to shift our entire culture from the bottom up.

But first, you have to ask yourself. Are you ready? Are you really ready? Not for the workouts, or the clean eating... but are you ready for Hard Work?
